The Branding Jumpstart: Naming Your Nonprofit

Choosing the right name is an important first step—it sets the tone for your organization and helps people understand your mission at a glance. Utilize the prompts below to help generate a name.

If you land upon a name or two you absolutely love, we will check to see if these can be registered. If you find, even after the exercise, you haven't found one you love, I will take a look at your form entries and generate some fresh ideas to consider. I am here to assist in this process every step of the way! Just reach out if you have questions.

Step 1: Define Your Core Identity

Use the following 4 questions to help clarify your organization/ business identity.

(e.g., lack of career direction and technical skills among young men)

(e.g., young men, especially recent graduates who aren’t sure about their next step)

(e.g., on-the-job training in the electrical trade, life skills, mentorship)

(e.g., real-time, hands-on experience instead of classroom focus)

Step 2: Build a Word Bank

Start generating words related to your mission, audience, and impact.

Consider these examples:

Mission-related: trade, skilled, electrical, hands-on, training, craft, career

• Audience-related: youth, young men, rising, brotherhood, grads, next gen

Values: initiative, discipline, growth, commitment, purpose, responsibility

• Imagery: spark, wire, path, forge, crew, current, anchor, launch

Step 3: Combine and Shortlist

Try mixing words or themes to create a name that’s short, meaningful, and easy to remember. Examples that could work based on your goals include:

• SparkWorks

• The Wire Crew

• Grounded Path

• Anchor & Ascent

• Forge Ahead

• TradeTrack

• NextVolt

• SkillBuilt

Narrow it down to 3–5 names you like most, then we’ll check for availability and move forward.

(Put an * by your top 3-5 choices)

Step 4: Check Availability & Register

Once we’ve shortlisted a name, I will check availability and guide you through registering it online. Registration is completed under your own account, and the $25 fee is paid directly to the state.
